So What Even Is a Silt Fence Installation?
Think of it as a temporary fabric wall. You put it up around your site, and it catches the soil before it runs away with the rainwater.
The fabric is woven — water can pass through, but the sediment gets held back. Steel or hardwood posts are driven into the ground to keep the whole thing standing. It’s not complicated gear. But it does a serious job.
You place it at the downstream end of your site — the lower side, where water naturally drains toward. When it rains, sediment hits the fence instead of your neighbour’s yard or the street drain.
That’s really all there is to it.

Here’s what most people don’t realise until it’s too late — in New South Wales, letting sediment run off your site unchecked is not okay. Local councils and EPA guidelines require erosion and sediment controls on earthworks sites. A silt fence is one of the first things inspectors look for.
And it’s not just about avoiding fines. Think about what uncontrolled runoff actually does — it blocks drains, muddies waterways, and dumps construction debris on the roads around your site. Nobody wants that on their hands.

How Silt Fence Installation Actually Works
Most failures I’ve seen come down to one thing — someone bought the fence, shoved the posts in the ground, and called it done. That’s not installation. That’s just putting something up and hoping for the best.
Here’s what doing it properly actually looks like:
Step 1 — Get the location right The fence goes on the downstream side of disturbed soil or any stockpiles on site. You’re placing it where the runoff is headed — not uphill, not randomly in the middle.
Step 2 — Space posts no more than 2 metres apart Go wider than that and the fence will sag under the weight of trapped sediment. Two metres is the standard. Stick to it.
Step 3 — Height above ground should be at least 600mm The fabric needs to be tall enough to actually hold sediment back during heavy rain. Six hundred millimetres above ground is the minimum that works.
Step 4 — Anchor the base into the ground This is the step most people skip. The bottom of the fabric must be trenched in or secured firmly. Leave a gap and water will just sneak underneath. The whole fence becomes pointless.
Step 5 — Inspect it after every storm A silt fence isn’t a one-time fix. After rain, go check it. Clear out built-up sediment before it gets too heavy and pulls the fence down.
One thing worth knowing — silt fences are designed for sheet flow. That’s when water spreads across the surface as a thin layer. If you’ve got concentrated flow or water moving through a proper channel, a silt fence isn’t the right tool for that.
Mistakes That Get People Into Trouble
These come up again and again on sites across Sydney.
Putting the fence on the wrong side
Downstream means the lower end of the site. Not uphill, not on the sides where water isn’t flowing. Wrong placement means the fence never even sees the sediment it’s supposed to catch.
Not securing the bottom
The most common mistake by far. The fabric has to be anchored at the base. An unsecured bottom edge is basically a gap for water to flow through freely.
Setting up the fence and forgetting about it
After the first big storm, check on it. Sediment builds up fast. An overloaded fence either collapses or stops letting water through properly — both are problems.
Thinking the site is too small to bother
Smaller jobs get caught out on this regularly. Council inspectors don’t give passes based on site size. If you’re doing earthworks, the rules apply.
